Blomvlei Multi-Purpose Centre project was initiated by the TCD Trust in response to Blomvlei Primary School’s expression of need through the 567mw Cape Talk “Silence the Violence†campaign in 2005.

Objective

The purpose of the project is to build a multi-purpose facility on the premises of the Blomvlei Primary School grounds in Hanover Park, Western Cape Province, South Africa.

This facility will comprise: a school hall with a stage and markings for multiple indoor sports; change room and toilets; catering kitchen; conference room; internet cafe; office space for community development organisations; library and media centre; educare creche; recycling centre; sports fields and hardcourt surfaces; seedling nursery and food garden.

Outcomes

  • Facilities are to support a full programme of extra-curricular activities for the learners of Blomvlei Primary School, including: sport, recreation, arts and culture as well as academic support programmes.
  • Facilities are to create a safe and inspiring “home away from home†environment.
  • Facilities are to serve a broader community education function.
  • The School Governing Body is to be empowered to manage the ongoing operation of the facility.
  • Certain components of the centre are included because of their potential to generate income.

Project Initiator and Funder

The Tourism Community Development Trust (TCD Trust) is a non-profit organisation promoting corporate responsibility in the South African tourism industry and is engaged in a number of community-based social development initiatives in the Western Cape. The TCD Trust is mainly funded by corporates from the tourism industry.
