We left Gamkaskloof (’Die Hell’) at first light and reached Ladder 9 and 3/4 in good time. To find it you go down into a little stream at the base of the cliff and as you approach a prominent poplar tree this gap magically appears in the misty morning and allows you access to it. I wasn’t sure if the cliff parted or the tree moved! Perhaps my Scott sparked and acted as a wand, I’ll never know, because the next thing the three of us were climbing ,heaving, pulling and clambering rapidly upwards and upwards like Jack of Beanstalk fame. It was really quite easy considering. The weather once we reached the ‘garage’ at the top was bloody appalling but we put our heads down and headed straight into the teeth of the wind. I looked about every now and then, but unfortunately today, Johan did not appear with coffee and rusks. Elsewhere I’m sure everyone is huddled in front of heaters watching the Tour de France and I feel privileged to be out on my bike like them achieving my goal. We just pick off each day one at a time although tomorrow we in for an early start and a push through to Montague. Thanks to everyone out there for cheering us on we really appreciate it - and it helps like you can’t believe. Thank you Di for being so strong and riding the Freedom Challenge for the Trust and to achieve your goal! You can still donate money to the TCD Trust on behalf of Di for riding this absolute challenge! www.tcdtrust.org.za/donateCompanies, Friends of the Trust, Individuals

In 2008 the TCD Trust met two amazing people from the UK who, both in their own way, wanted to make a difference in this world. Simon Heale ran the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town and Toni Yardley made a movie and organized a charitable event. Both of them raised by doing that an amazing amount of money and donated that to the TCD Trust.

The Trust is very proud of them and is so grateful for everything that they did. The money Simon and Toni raised will go towards or latest project; Blomvlei Primary. A school based community project for people that live in an extremely violent, poor and dangerous area, Hanover Park in the Cape Flats.

With the help of Simon and Toni are we again one step closer to creating the safe haven we have all been dreaming of.

Simon Heale raised ZAR 21.510 and Toni Yardley ZAR 25.951

The Trust is very proud to say that at the beginning of this month
Home From Home Hospitality Services signed up as new DIAMOND Friend of the TCD Trust.

John and Lynda van Niekerk purchased an apartment at Marina Residential in October, 2002 and wanting to have it managed to a 5 star status for guests and to have it cared for on an ongoing basis, they formed Home from Home Hospitality Services.

Home from Home’s basic philosophy is “To Exceed Satisfaction”

Exceed: be more or greater than; go beyond; do more; surpass, excel, outshine, go beyond

Satisfy: meet the expectations of; leave nothing to be desired; *gratify, please, fulfil, bring comfort, delight, joy, pleasure, happiness, contentment, enjoyment. * pay, make good, settle.

Their Motivation:

• To work closely with and to represent each property owner to welcome and care for their guests as they would wish to do for themselves.

• To uplift, impart skills and give dignity to our staff, as well as a sense of purpose, acceptance, family and belonging.

• To care for, maintain and present each property in our care to a standard of excellence that all those who enter recognize, appreciate and are delighted by.

Hereby the TCD Trust gives a warm welcome to Home From Home Hospitality Services.

Thank you for becoming a Friend of the Trust!Companies, Friends of the Trust, Individuals

At first it was rather overwhelming and very easy to get lost amongst hundreds of stands but we all got used to the layout eventually.
Indaba 2008 worked out to be an amazing opportunity to create new contacts within the industry and meet travel trade representatives form all over the country as well as other African countries.
In terms of the TCD Trust it was very busy three days filled up with various appointments, handing out the flyers and badges, meeting existing Friends etc.
The vast majority of the companies that we spoke to seemed extremely enthusiastic about the Trust and the project we are working on at the moment in Hanover Park.
Hopefully the new contacts that have been created will turn into long term relationships.

Baphumelele Respite Center

The Woodberry Woodpeckers from Ireland are showing their ongoing commitment and support to the Baphumelele Respite Center. They understand that their great work of building and refurbishing the Center in 2007 was phase 1 of the project. The next phase is to ensure that the new icon in Khayelitsha is sustainable and can provide care in a controlled environment for the sick in years to come.

In November 2007 the Woodberry Woodpeckers donated €12 000 (R116 992-80) to the TCD Trust in support of the newly employed qualified nurse at the Respite Center.

Another fundamental inhibitor to proper service was the lack of transport. Patients need to be transported to and from the hospitals for further treatment, medicines need to be collected at the local clinics and taken to day patients, etc.

Again the Woodberry Woodpeckers, as part of their commitment, purchased a vehicle for the Respite Center with full insurance. In picture you can witness the hand over of the keys to an elated Rosie Mashale by Derek Wallace, one of the founder members of the Woodberry Woodpeckers.

The GM Dealership in Cape Town, Reeds Cape Town will service the vehicle for free until it reach 100 000km’s. We also thank them for their support.

Some words from Simon;

“Why, oh why I hear you say!! Well, for three reasons: I have always wanted to do this special race, I am intrigued to know what extra resources its going to take to get me past the marathon mark and lastly, to raise money for a very good cause in the land of my birth.

I will be running to raise as much as possible for The Tourism Community Development Trust who support community based projects such as schools, crèches, HIV care centres in the desperately deprived areas of the Western Cape.

I am looking to raise upwards of £10 000. I will run the race and reach my goal and I am now appealing for your help to reach the other and most important goal of helping those far less fortunate than ourselves. “

We are very happy with all that Simon does, and we are wishing him the best of luck for March!
Of course we will keep you updated about Simon and his challenge.

On Sunday the 25th of November the TCD Trust took 45 children from Baphumelele Orphanage up Table Mountain.
The weather was great and all the children were very excited.
At 8h30am a bus, booked and paid for by REALIZE Events, came to pick up the children and brought them to Table Mountain.
At the mountain a group of 20 people from the UK accompanied and they did a great job assisting and taking care of the children.
The group also worked at Baphumelele the weekend and constructed a wall.
Many thanks to everybody for that, you all did a great job!

After the visit to Table Mountain we went to the Camps Bay beach.
There we played cricket, football, tennis and had a refreshing swim.
The tour group from the UK arranged a lunch for all the children which everybody enjoyed very much.
On our way back to Baphumelele all the children where sleeping, the end of a great day full of excitement!

Thank you to REALIZE Events, Table Mountain and the tour group from the UK! Last week the Trust got approached by Lisa from ‘Bespoke Bathrooms’ because she wanted to make a difference this year.
Instead of sending Christmas gifts to all her clients she decided to donate the money she would normally spend on it to the Trust. Of course we are very exited about her generous gesture and thank her very much!
Lisa’s idea helped us create the “Gift Voucher”.
On the TCDTrust website you will find a page about the voucher which you can use as a gift!
Follow the steps on the page and we will make sure that you will receive a voucher that you can use for the occasion you want to use it for.
Your gift has never been this special.

Make a difference this year! Because shouldn’t we all do that sometimes?..

The Trust is happy and proud to tell that we had such a great response on the transport request we send out to our Friends.
A special thanks goes out to REALIZE Events for their fast reply and promise to make sure that the children of the Baphumelele Orphanage on Sunday the 25th of November have transport to Table Mountain and back.

Aside from the larger community the Trust also takes on more personal projects such as arranging outings for children from local orphanages in the townships.
This November the Trust decided to take the children up Table Mountain as these children of Cape Town have never set foot on our beloved Mountain.
Thankful are we that Table Mountain gave us the tickets for free and that REALIZE Events helped us out on the transport.

Besides these two companies also a special thanks to them who replied very quick;
Springbok Atlas, Africa Travel Co, Baz Bus and
They were entertained by a magician, had their faces painted, went "trick-or-treating" and ate a lot of sweets!

The TCD Trust was one of the beneficiaries of the Tourism Industry Charity Event (T.I.C.E.) Spring Ball, held on Friday 31st August 2007 at the CTICC in Cape Town. The annual charity event raised over R200,000 this year with the proceeds shared between the two well-deserved beneficiaries: the TCD Trust and Home of Hope.

The event, facilitated by ASATA, CAPE TOWN TRAVEL WOMEN’S CLUB, FEDHASA, SATSA & SKAL INTERNATIONAL, included welcome drinks, 3-course dinner, live music, dancing, performance from the Amy Biehl Choir, a Grand Charity Auction and and a lucky draw with many fantastic prizes.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to all individuals and companies from the South African tourism industry that braved the "not-quite-yet-Spring" weather to attend the event. A further special mention must go out to Anne Lamb and her organising committee, the "TICE MICE" for arranging the superb event.

As one of the beneficiaries of the event, the TCD Trust had an opportunity to tell guests a bit more about the trust. Di Thomas, TCD trustee, delivered a compelling presentation which showcased some of the trust’s previous projects, as well as giving a glimpse of the trust’s upcoming (and most ambitious) event to date.

For those that were not able to attend the event, please view the TICE presentation and Blomvlei project videos that were presented by Di.

Thank you once again - one and all :)

The trust is please to welcome two new friends to the trust.

Fairfield Tours and its sports and adventure travel division, Amabokoboko, have shown their support for change in South Africa’s communities influenced by - and influencing - the South African tourism industry.

Johan Smal from Fairfield has been instrumental in the trust’s involvement at the Baphumelele Educare Centre and Respite Centre - especially by involving the group of Irish volunteers from the Woodberry Woodpeckers recently.

"We are on a major environmental and sustainable tourism drive and are implementing our various policies as we speak. As we have generated a mutual trust relationship we as Fairfield Corporate & Sport would like to extend the relationship with the TCD Trust" said Johan.

"Our clients are becoming more and more aware of the projects and would like to contribute. We advise them to donate to the trust then they can see the fruit of their donations as some are quite wary because from experience, they never see what happened with their contributions."

Johan - thanks once again to you, your clients and the ever-energetic Woodberry Woodpeckers for your assistance and contributions.
